A new diagnosis...

Today I learned that one of my Son Michael's friends was diagnosed with TYPE 1 this past week. I reached out to the Family, who we know since Michael was in pre-school. (he is 10 now). They are in shock and trying to adjust.. Feelings I remember very clearly. I wish them well and will share any experience and information that may be of interest.

What I know now... I wish I knew it then.

Wanda's evaluation a few months back suggested that we detox Zack of Mercury, and Candida (yeast). She recommended Lact-Enz by Standard Process. This provides macronutrient assimlation , supports cellular enegry and digestive and immune functions. He was also calling for Catalyn-Standard Process. We sort of use this as his daily vitamin, and she suggested he take 1 more daily.

Wanda's food evalution had alot of restrictions and is very complicated. I was pretty overwhelmed but I thought that with my Kids home for the Summer, I would make the big push to work with Zack.

Summer was busier than I planned these eating restrictions were too harsh at the time. In retrospect, the Boys all had a great Summer. Lots of friends, Beach, Pool, Fishing...etc. They were very happy kids and that is important too.

Fast forward- Football Season starts... There is a boy on Michael's Team who's Father is a Naturopathic Doctor in our area. (Steve Nenninger) His name has come up in circles a few times, but now I see him at least 3 times a week. So I discuss Zack with him. He sends me some video clips about Gluten... he does the IgG Food Panel for Zack and Michael. We discuss some of the other work I have done with Zack...I tell him about some of the Blogs that I follow (Kim Brown-livingwithouttype1, Daniel, Lily-Type1ontherun) He is not suprised at all. He is very confident about IgG allergens and eating for Blood Type. I feel renewed and relieved to have made his acquaintance.....

I will tell you this.... WHEN ZACK WAS FIRST DIAGNOSED, IF I HAD KNOWN THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW, THE BIG ADJUSTMENTS IN OUR LIVES WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE FOCUSED ON DIET AND LESS FOCUSED ON INSULIN! MILK, MILK, MILK is such a big NO NO!!! And Zack LOVES his milk. Of course his IgG test show that he has a high reaction to Casein, Cottage Cheese, Cow's Milk, Goat's Milk, Whey and Yogurt.

I told Steve about how even on the way to the emergency room, upon diagnosis, Zack was pleading for milk- of course he could not hold it down. Again Steve is not suprised. He says that at this point it actually has an addictive quality.

Mike and I knew we should have taken MILK out of our home immediately- but the Endocrinologists and the dieticians at the hospital just kept telling us that Zack could eat what he wanted as long as we covered it with insulin. UGGHHHHHH...

OK. I need to get past that now.... There is a plan. Zack's body can still heal.

Interestingly enough, Zack did not show Gluten intolerance... but Michael's was off the charts. I'm sure it is affecting his GUT.

We will be concentrating on DAIRY and GLUTEN elimination in our home. We will also work with some of the remedies, and nutritional support Wanda has suggested.

Steve reasonably suggests, don't try to change too much at once. Sometimes when you pull one allergen out of the mix, the other ones sort of calm too.

Jaden will get the IgG Panel this week. All 3 boys will get BLOOD TYPE TESTS. We will re-evaluate what is necessary after we get these results back.......

The intention is to heal Zack. The reason I am also evaluating the other Boys is because IgG Allergens slowly "chip away at the stone". Anything that we can do to improve overall health now will definitely benefit them too...

What is the plan now???

Well, I dropped off Zack's saliva swab to a Naturopath we have worked with in the past. I was introduced to "Wanda" through my friend Rachel . (who has recovered her Son from Autism and helps many others with their road to wellness)

Zack was only 4 when he was first diagnosed. I didn't yet have the confidence or this new found support (and hope) to take this less traveled path. I did see some improvement, in general health and even demeanor after trying non-traditional healing modalities, but never imlemented anything striclty for an extended period of time. I think that being exposed to different options was just all part of the learning experience.

It is really important to know what is priority to eliminate from Zack's diet. Wanda does do an extensive food allergy analysis or a general one.... Zack is calling for the general one right now.

I am curious to know what will come up on his list... in the beginning Soy Milk, Cane Sugar , honey, brown sugar , rice syrup, corn, rye, and a few other things were to be eliminated. SUCANAT (Sugar Cane Natural) was allowed. Interesting that Cow's Milk and Wheat were not on the restricted list at the time.

Currently we have no Cow's milk in the house and we are using almond and coconut flour for backing and cooking. Until I get the results back, I'm not going to go crazy eliminating anything else.

(oooo, I just remembered, I asked Zack's Endocrinologist for all records since diagnosis in July of 2007.... I haven't recevied them yet..... need to follow up and get that info. )

Wanda has been able to advise, in order of priority, which heavy metals, parasites, or other toxins need to be cleared as well as which vitamins, minerals and nutrients Zack requires. I am looking forward to getting the results back.

I have done these swab evaluations for my 2 other Boy's (Michael and Jaden) as well as for myself during the past three years. I will say that since crossing over to more natural preventitive care for my family, ill health is not what it used to be in my household. If we do catch something (and everyone does) the recovery is so fast... literally overnight.. sometimes even a few hours! Not kidding!

Well that's all for now. It has been a very busy day. We've been out since 7 am. . Zack had a Lacrosse Tournament in which he played 3 games and then he had a baseball game right after. Poor kid had his finger pricked every twenty minutes to make sure he wasn't going low... Michael, our oldest Son, has a baseball game tonight at 6pm. Both boys have games tomorrow as well.... It's busy ,but we LOVE it! Just looked inside and Jaden fell asleep watching a movie... I may be home with him tonight:-)

They know not what they do...

One of the hardest thing we face when trying to clean up our children's diets is the outside influence of friends, family, and even school. Trying to eliminate dairy is next to impossible when our Son's little league coach takes the entire team for ice cream. I know, I sound like a Mom with no back-bone, but there are already so many rules for a 7 year old boy diagnosed with Type 1.

Our children's health is most certainly at stake. The diagnosis for autoimmune disease (geez... everything is classified as autoimmune these days) is exponentially on the rise. We live in a pretty small community and last year in our elementary school, 3 children were diagonosed with Type 1. Then 2 or 3 more this year. Not even touching on Autism, IBS, Crohns disease, Allergies to everything under the Sun...... they are all rampant too.

When discussing healthy eating with friends who have seemingly symptom free children, it is amazing to me that so many are still unaware of dangers in processed food alone! I am eager to share this information with anyone who is ready to hear it. It is frustrating how many are not ready!

Generally speaking ... learn to read labels. And please, take small steps... but STEP! We all learn, step, back slide and step again.... it's alright.

So here are some simple things to avoid:
(Please note- I am taking this from "New Living", a Long Island publication )

1) If you see the word HYDROGENATED as in some kind of hydrogentated oil, or the words vegegtable shortening on the list of ingredients.. put it back... this will make you / your kids fat and clog arteries.

2) HFCS- High Fructose Corp Syrup is linked to many diseases and makes food addicting by shutting down the leptin mechanism in your body that tells you to stop eating because you are full.

3) If the product has aspartame or any other man made, wonder sweetener, do not purchase it. Aspartame is extremely dangerous.

Start somewhere! It certainly cannot hurt.

My First Blog......

My Son, Zachary, was diagnosed wtih Type 1 Diabetes in July of 2007. From the day he was diagnosed, I never, for one second believed that the Diabetes was the "Cause". Rather, I believe that the Diabetes is the "Symptom". There are many factors that have contributed to this symptom of "dis-ease" in his little body.

I have dabbled in, read up on and learned about the body, healing modalities, diet, nutrition, and theories during these last 3 years. I have searched for connections on the internet tirelessly. Finally I came to be introduced to Kim and "livingwithouttype1.com", as well as the Roman Family and the PH Miracle for Diabetes.

Much of what I have learned along the way was confirmed.....though I should have trusted my intuition all along... a lesson in which I am still progressing......Where I once dabbled, I hope to dive in.

It is important to share this information .... to help others and to be helped. This is my attempt to "put it out there" .

I hope to share experiences here. By sharing I hope to reinforce what I have believed all along and to do what I know is right for my entire family. I am looking forward to support from other like minded people.
